Jill Cowan (AAJA-Texas) will be joining The New York Times as a California Today correspondent in November. She’ll be based in Los Angeles, but will be traveling to communities large and small to write The Times’s daily newsletter focused on the Golden State. Jill currently works at The Dallas Morning News as an economy reporter and grew up in Orange County, California. Previously, she worked for The Tennessean in Nashville and has written for publications up and down California, including The Bakersfield Californian, The Los Angeles Times and its community newspapers as well as the college newspaper and alumni magazine and at her alma mater, UC Berkeley. For the past two years, she’s been a faculty member for AAJA’s Voices program, which has given her opportunities to work with students and receive editing experience. Shannon Gee (AAJA-Seattle) was recently named the general manager of Seattle Channel, the City of Seattle’s award-winning municipal television station. Previously, she served as the station’s interim general manager since February 2017 and has produced, photographed and edited stories and programs for the Seattle Channel since 2005. She received Emmy awards in 2017 and 2016 for her work on animated documentaries about Nisei veterans in partnership with the Wing Luke Museum and the NVC Foundation. Shannon began her producing career in public television, working on national productions at KCTS-9, Seattle’s public television affiliate. Shannon also was a freelance film reviewer and features writer for a number of Seattle-area publications including The Seattle Times, Seattle Weekly, The Stranger and The International Examiner and has worked on a variety of independent public media documentaries. Rebecca Isjwara (AAJA-Asia) is joining Asian Private Banker as a financial technology reporter. The publication hones in on the private banking and wealth management industry in Asia, and she will focus on the financial technology solutions serving the industry. She joins full-time after interning at the publication last year. Rebecca is also part of the committee responsible for N3Con: New. Now. Next. Media Conference, an event hosted annually by AAJA-Asia. Samira Sadeque (AAJA-New York) was selected as one of 26 journalists for the Maynard 200 Fellowship, which aims to train 200 diverse storytellers in the next five years. During the fellowship, she will focus on an entrepreneurship track to work on The Bangladeshi Identity Project, a community-based media platform for the Bangladeshi diaspora she runs with a group of three members. Alysha Tsuji (AAJA-Los Angeles) recently began a new position as an associate editor on ESPN’s social media team in Los Angeles. Previously, she was with USA TODAY Sports’ sports and culture site, For The Win, where she wrote blog posts, feature stories, interviewed over 60 professional athletes and celebrities—from Kobe Bryant to Kevin Hart—and obsessively covered the professional athlete social media beat. Prior to For The Win, Alysha worked with SB Nation’s social desk, and as a member of the Sports Journalism Institute’s Class of 2015, was an editorial production intern with MLB.com in New York City. Alysha graduated in 2015 with a degree in journalism from Pepperdine University. She was first introduced to AAJA’s Sports Task Force at the 2014 AAJA National Convention in Washington, D.C. and has been an AAJA member ever since.
