Poytner News University Free Writing Course

Journalists at all professional levels can take this self-directed, online course. Poynter’s News University is offering the course “Pulitzer Prize-Winning Writers: Secrets of Their Craft.” The course is a compilation of a dozen Pulitzer Prize-winning writers and master teachers sharing their best tips. The lessons are broken down into 10-minute videos, featuring writing and reporting strategies. Registration is free and ongoing. This course can be taken at any time.

Free Digital Media Resources from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism‘s Advanced Media Institute offers free online trainings, interactive live streams, videos and tutorials. Topics include video and animation, audio, data visualization, multimedia, reporting and public records, social media and web development. Classes cover podcasting, multimedia storytelling, how to shoot and edit with an iPhone, intro to cleaning data, Facebook and Twitter for journalists, and more. Anyone is welcome to access these resources.

Society of Professional Journalists Google News Lab Training

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Google News Lab provide training and outreach to journalists interested in applying Google tools in their news gathering, reporting and storytelling. The training includes a workshop lasting from one to three hours featuring an overview of the Google tools or in-depth training on one Google tool. Longer trainings are also available.

Newsrooms must come up with at least 25 participants as well as LCD projector/screen, laptop audio and WIFi. The Society of Professional Journalists pays trainers to come to your location or newsroom courtesy of a grant from the Google News Lab.

Open Matter: Local News Bootcamps with Google News Lab, News Media Alliance, and 4 Top J-Schools

Over the next 6 months, Matter will be running four Local News Bootcamps in four different regions of the United States in partnership with Google News Lab. Led by Matter’s Pete Mortensen, Matter will hold four tuition-free design and entrepreneurial thinking bootcamps for journalists, news businesspeople, designers, and technologists across the U.S. The program is also partnering with four journalism schools: the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism; the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism; the James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management & Leadership at the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication; and UC Berkeley Advanced Media Institute.

Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society Fellowship

Journalists worldwide working for news organizations in a business, technology or leadership capacity can apply for a fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society will host at least one fellow for an academic year to carry out a research project on journalism innovation.

Candidates must propose a project relating to journalism’s digital transformation. Examples might include ideas for new revenue streams to fund journalism, the construction of new tools for reporting or research into news consumption patterns. Fellows receive a stipend and additional allowances for housing, childcare and health insurance.

Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship

The Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship, sponsored by the University of Michigan, brings exceptional journalists from the United States and abroad together for a year of academic study. Fellows devise a personalized plan of study with access to the courses and resources at the university. Typically, 12 Americans are joined by six to eight international colleagues. Applicants must be granted a leave of absence for the academic year from their employers.

Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience. Print, broadcast and online journalists are eligible to apply. U.S. fellows receive US$75,000 and have their tuition and travel costs covered by the program. The stipend for international fellows varies.

American Political Science Association Congressional Fellowship Program

Gain first-hand knowledge of Congress and policymaking by spending a year on Capitol Hill! The American Political Science Association Congressional Fellowship Program is now accepting applications from journalists for the 2019-2020 fellowship year. Fellows gain hands-on experience in Congress and the policymaking process by serving on congressional staffs, following an intensive one-month orientation. Fellows also participate in enrichment programs throughout the fellowship year.

Open to print and broadcast journalists (including online journalists) with a bachelor’s degree and two to ten years of professional experience in writing, reporting, editing, producing, or directing. Preference is given to candidates with a background in political reporting but without extensive Washington experience. Fellows will receive a $52,500 stipend plus travel allowance.
