The Asian American Journalists Association is pleased to announce Brian Nguyen and Maya Srikrishnan as the next AAJA Voices directors.
AAJA Voices is a journalism training fellowship for college and graduate students. Student fellows from the program’s 30-year history have moved on to work for several news outlets, from the New York Times to Frontline, as well as local newspapers, online news operations and broadcast news stations. Many Voices alumni return to the program as faculty and mentors.
Brian Nguyen is one of them. He was a Voices student fellow at the AAJA 2014 Convention in Washington D.C.
He now works as the associate managing editor at The Tylt. He also served as a Voices faculty mentor for the last three years, helping student teams produce video and photography projects.
Co-director Maya Srikrishnan worked with Voices as a faculty mentor for the 2019 cohort in Atlanta. She works as a reporter for Voice of San Diego, covering stories connected to the U.S.-Mexico border as well as immigration issues.
Brian and Maya will serve as Voices co-directors for the 2021-2022 student cohorts. They succeed Jessie Tseng and Maya Sugarman, who have served as Voices co-directors for the last three years and who went above and beyond in raising up student journalists and mentors. We thank Jessie and Maya for their service, passion and dedication.
The Voices leadership team also welcomes deputy directors Farnoush Amiri and Waliya Lari. In addition to working on the leadership team, Farnoush and Waliya will serve as faculty mentors for the 2021 student cohort.
