AAJA is holding a special election to fill the remainder of Ramy Inocencio’s 2019 term as AAJA Vice President of Journalism Programs. Ramy was recently elected to serve as AAJA Senior Vice President for the 2019 term.
The Vice President of Journalism Programs ensures that AAJA’s professional training and support stays ahead of industry changes. This officer is primarily dedicated to fulfilling two crucial tenets of AAJA’s mission:
- To provide a means of association and support among Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) journalists, and to advance AAPI journalists as news managers and media executives.
- To provide encouragement, information, advice and scholarship assistance to AAPI students who aspire to professional journalism careers.
The Vice President of Journalism Programs-elect will be expected to attend the 2018 AAJA Fall Board Meeting taking place November 16-17, 2018 in San Francisco, California.
Electronic voting will begin Friday, October 19 at 5pm PT with the final results announced via email on Monday, October 29. Ballots will be sent to AAJA members who are eligible to vote in the election.
Election Schedule:
- Monday, October 15 – Announcement of candidates
- Friday, October 19 – Voting starts 5pm PT
- Friday, October 26 – Voting ends 12pm PT
- Monday, October 29 – Announcement of officer-elect via e-mail
AAJA 2019 VICE PRESIDENT OF JOURNALISM PROGRAMS CANDIDATE: FRANK BI
Frank Bi is an editorial engineer at Vox Media in New York City where he works on innovative storytelling projects for the web. His work is a mix of web development, graphics and journalism. Frank is also an adjunct professor at Fordham University in Bronx, New York where he teaches data literacy and visualization. Additionally, he is a Google News Initiative trainer and travels to dozens of newsrooms, conferences and classrooms every year to teach young and veteran journalists alike on utilizing free journalism tools in their workflows. Frank graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in computer science. As an AAJA member, Frank is the National Convention Programming Chair for the 2019 convention in Atlanta, Georgia. He has served in this position for the past two conferences. Frank is a 2011 graduate of Voices and is also the emcee of AAJA’s annual karaoke night.
Excerpt from Frank’s candidate statement:
“I’ll make it my responsibility to ensure our organization’s signature programs remain at the top of their game and are well-funded and unblocked from doing what they do best. Additionally, I’ll look into new ways for our members who cannot attend our annual convention or other events to participate in our signature programs. I’ll also work to expand our offerings to include more members by bringing them to the chapter-level with help from the National Board and our national convention programming committee.”

AAJA 2019 VICE PRESIDENT OF JOURNALISM PROGRAMS CANDIDATE: ARCHITH SESHADRI
Archith Seshadri is a global journalist based in Atlanta, Georgia. Archith recently spent two years anchoring in New Delhi, India at WION (part of Zee News) where he covered everything from politics to entertainment. Over the past decade, Archith has worked in many newsrooms across the US including stops in Macon (CBS), Augusta (ABC), Charlotte (FOX), and Atlanta (CNN International). Archith is an engineer turned journalist and an alumnus of Georgia Tech where he got his Masters in Industrial Engineering. Archith is represented by UTA.

“Archith is passionate about AAJA’s mission and wants to help budding journalists and established journalists reach their full potential. Archith believes that journalists can grow their careers, like his career has, through the AAJA family and pipeline of programs. Whether it’s JCamp, Voices, Mentor Match or ELP, Archith feels like each platform can nurture journalists at different stages of their career and revamping programs will create a stronger foundation for print, broadcast, radio, and new media journalists.”
